Wedding dinner instead of reception?

My fiancee' and I have learned that we r having a baby. Due to this we r deciding to scale back on the wedding altogether. the biggest thing is the reception. instead of the hall and decorations, center pieces, DJ etc. we r thinking about continuing with the church ceremony and treating immediate family and friends, approx 50 ppl, to dinner afterward.

My main Q is, anyone know of good places to do this in SE michigan that would be good aside from pondarosa or old country buffet etc??

and secondly has ne one did this or been to a wedding done in this fashion and would to share their experience or tips??

thanks in advance.Wedding dinner instead of reception?
I went to a wedding with a "dinner" instead of a reception, like you described, this summer. It was a second wedding for the bride and she didn't want a big hooplah. It was seriously one of the best wedding meals I've ever had, and it felt like a real adult gathering instead of a child's birthday party (the way most receptions end up feeling).

I'm not familiar with SE Michigan, but you might try calling your Convention and Visitor's Bureau. They are used to people needing to feed large groups and may be able to suggest some good options for you. Lots of restaurants have private or party rooms where you could celebrate.Wedding dinner instead of reception?
my family has events in a private room in a pizza parlor many have them if you reserve in advance and often at no extra charge. they can serve beer and wine if you want it but it is just pizza usually but some can give a whole Italian meal. It would be very reasonable if you can find such a place in your area. Another idea is buffet in the church hall. good luck to you both and the baby.Wedding dinner instead of reception?
Check with not only your church but other churches in your area and have the food catered in from a local grocery store, they have delicious food and are very reasonably priced. Best Wishes!
Does your church have a large room that you could have the dinner in? Thats what i am doing?
